Hospital São Sebastião was founded in Caju in 1889 by D. Pedro II in the context of a yellow fever epidemic. The site was a complex of hospital pavilions until it was deactivated in the early 2000s. In 2008, some of the remaining structures were occupied, making way for a community of thousands of residents.
